Police have arrested a 20-year-old Perry man accused of stabbing and killing his ex-wife at her Brigham City apartment, Wednesday afternoon.

Mike Nelsen, acting Brigham City Police Chief, said officers received a call around 12:30 p.m. from a man saying he had just killed his ex-wife. When officers responded to the apartment at 691 South 600 East, they found 19-year-old Keltsie Gerlach dead from multiple stab wounds.

Officers arrested Spencer Gerlach on a charge of first-degree felony murder. He was booked into the Box Elder County Jail.

Nelsen said officers found a large knife at the scene, believed to be the murder weapon. The victim’s body was sent to medical examiners to determine how many times she was stabbed.

A 15-month-old baby was also in apartment but was not in the same room where the crime occurred, said Nelsen. The baby was found asleep when officers arrived and was given to Division of Child and Family services.

Investigators interviewed Gerlach Wednesday night, according to Nelsen and are unsure of his motive for killing the woman. There were no indications inside the apartment that the couple had been fighting or struggling.

Police records show no previous calls of domestic abuse at the location.

An investigation is ongoing and formal charges are pending. Gerlach is expected to be arraigned in 1st District Court within the next several days.
