LOGAN — Police officers are investigating the cause of a two-vehicle crash that sent a woman and baby to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. The crash occurred around 1:50 p.m., near the intersection of 1000 W. US-89/91.
Logan City Police Assistant Chief Jeff Simmons said the woman was driving a Buick La Sabre northbound on US-89/91 when she rear-ended a semi-truck.

“She was weaving all over the road according to witnesses’ reports,” Simmons said, “[she] then struck the rear of this semi-trailer as it was stopped in the left turn lane, waiting to turn westbound.”

The woman had to be extricated from the car by fire fighters. She was transported by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital. The months-old baby in the back seat did not appear to have any injuries.

The male driver of the semi-truck was also not hurt.

Simmons said officers believe the female driver may have been under the influence. Just before the crash, a convenience store clerk witnessed the woman, who appeared to be intoxicated.

“The clerk at Duke’s Convenience Store called in a possible intoxicated female, and watched her jump into this silver sedan,” explained Simmons. “She left going southbound on the highway.

“As [Logan City dispatch operators] were starting to put out the information to police and officers started to respond to the scene, she allegedly turned around on the highway and started driving back toward Logan, heading northbound.”

Police are not releasing the identity or condition of the woman, pending notification of family.

The accident partially blocked US-89/91 for more than two hours, while officers investigated and cleared the vehicles.
