Republican candidate for governor Aimee Winder Newton has Cache Valley ties with a daughter currently enrolled and a son who has graduated from Utah State University. So she said they are big Aggie fans. She decided to run for governor of Utah because of some of the issues facing the state. On one hand, she said great things are happening with job growth and a strong economy. But she also has great concerns such as a massive teacher shortage in the state and growth issues such as air quality and housing affordability. As far as tax reform, she applauds the legislature on their hard work on the issue and she feels there does need to be some tax reform.
“But I’m a little bit concerned with the speed that I’m seeing this go through. One of the comments that I made on Twitter was ‘hey legislature can we please wait until the legislative session in January to tackle this instead of trying to call a special session in December, during the holidays, when people aren’t paying attention”, she said.
On a recent KVNU For the People program, Winder Newton says with how the initial bill on reform was rolled out last year, it caught many people off guard. It was brought out eleven days before the end of the session and with very little public input. This fostered much distrust that the public continues to have of this process.
