There is a $10 entry fee. Weston is a town with a population of less than 500, and the country store is the only retail business in town.

Van Woodward of Woodward Country Store in Weston, ID puts some props together in front of his store to call attention to the upcoming Ice fishing tournament.

First prizes will go to the longest trout with a cash prizes and a trophy. Cash prizes will also go to the second and third longest trout.

“So far, the longest was a 27 ¾ inch trout caught out of Twin Lakes,” he said. “Last year the big winner took home $550, but I can’t remember how big it was.”

Woodward also pays $50 for the biggest non trout and $50 for the smallest fish caught with a hook.

There are also lots of door-prizes like hats, fishing gear, Pepsi and Coke products, and other items. Viking Leather also supports the Weston business at the fishing tournament. Dennis Petersen from Smithfield is donating bridles. Viking Leather, from nearby Dayton, makes and sells leather goods for motorcycle riders including leather jackets, vests, and chaps, as well as patches, pins, purses, and bags. Jeff Hill will donate a European mount and Tad Seamons a meat cutter will donate some kind of meat.

“February is a great time for a tournament because it’s a boring month for outdoorsmen,” he said. “All of the hunting is over, and unless you’re a trapper, there is not much to do. This has been a fun event for our town.”

The tournament grows by about 25 fishermen a year.
