December 10, 1935 ~ November 17, 2019 – (age 83)Victor Harvey Mortensen, 83, loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend, passed away November 17, 2019 in Kaysville, Utah from complications with prostate cancer.
He was born December 10, 1935 in Logan, Cache, Utah to Victor Julius Mortensen and Lula Roskelley. He was the 3rd child. Harvey grew up in Smithfield, Utah. He graduated from North Cache High School in 1954. He served in the Northern States LDS Mission that encompassed parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa and met his future sweetheart there. After they completed their missions Harvey married Patsy Delores Tolman in the Logan Utah Temple in 1958.
They brought 4 children into the world while living in Utah, and then moved to Anaheim California in 1968 where they had 2 more children and lived there 10 years. Harvey loved his career with the Boy Scouts of America which brought about a move to Marquette, Michigan and then later they returned to Utah where he lead the Trapper Trails Council and did much to ensure their financial future through endowments.
Harvey and Pat had the privilege of serving a full time mission together in the Mississippi Jackson Mission and came to love the people of the south. They have also enjoyed their work as tour guides on Temple Square and serving in the Bountiful Temple.
Harvey enjoyed being a father of 6 children and later a grandfather of 33 and great-grandfather of 25. He loved to spend time visiting his family. He enjoyed family baseball and big holiday parties. As a BYU graduate Harvey enjoyed attending many BYU sporting events. He was an avid birdwatcher and took up painting those birds in his retirement. He had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and lived that gospel in every part of his life. He had a spiritual gift of inviting the spirit when he taught, blessing his family and others greatly with that gift.
After Patsy’s passing Harvey married Phyllis Griffin in 2014 and they enjoyed many adventures including serving an 18 month mission in Nauvoo, Illinois where they performed, taught and made many wonderful friends. They also enjoyed sporting events and serving on Temple Square together and had season tickets to the theater and loved dining out. Together they had 13 children, 65 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren that they attended many family events for.
Harvey is survived by his second wife Phyllis Griffin of Clarkston, Utah, his 6 children and their spouses: Brad (Claudia), Boyd (Kim), Rod (Krista), Kelly (James Porter), Bart (Stephanie), and David (Leila). 31 Grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren his sisters LuJean Leake and Eunice Barrett and his step sister-in-law Merle Elizabeth Alvey.
He is also survived by Phyllis Griffin’s children Lanette (Garth Thompson), Laurie (Darwin Thompson), Rebecca (Kevin Nielsen), Patricia (John Bradley), Roxanne Wilson, Edwin (Amy), 31 grandchildren
Harvey was preceded in death by his first wife Patsy Delores Tolman and two grandchildren Adam and Joseph and Phyllis’ son-in-law Mark Wilson and 1 granddaughter, Michelle Thompson.
A viewing will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00pm at the Fox Pointe Ward LDS Chapel, 1520 Fox Pointe Drive, Kaysville, Utah with another viewing the next day Saturday, November 23, 2019 in the same location from 9:00 -10:15am and the funeral beginning at 10:30am. Interment will take place at the Smithfield, Utah Cemetery at 2:30pm.
