A Lewiston Elementary School teacher and her son were killed in a head-on collision near Lava Hot Springs in Idaho Sunday afternoon.
According to Idaho State Police, the accident occurred just after 3 p.m. on US-30. Austin Raush of Idaho Falls was driving eastbound in a 2007 Toyota Camry. Near milepost 370, the car crossed into the westbound lanes hitting a 2013 Nissan Versa, driven by 34-year-old Nyals Bodine of North Logan.
Bodine was traveling with his 57-year-old mother, Leah “Jan” Tingey, and her husband, 61-year-old Jeffrey Tingey, also from North Logan. Both Bodine, and his mother, died at the scene of the accident.
Investigators said all three traveling in the Versa were wearing seat belts. Rausch was not.
Jeffrey Tingey was transported by air ambulance and Rausch, the teen driver of the Camry, was transported by ground ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center.
Jan Tingey was a fourth grade teacher at Lewiston Elementary School. According to her Facebook page, she married Jeffrey in February 2004. The two of them shared a love of music and played in a band together called Overland.
Bodine grew up in Cache Valley and was a member of the Smithfield Blue Sox baseball team.
The accident marks another tragedy for the Tingey/Bodine family within 13 months. In February of 2015, Jan Tingey’s daughter and Nyals Bodine’s sister, Amanda Hoyt was killed. The 26-year-old woman was shot and killed by her boyfriend in a murder-suicide east of North Logan.
