SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes is directing county clerks to complete the paperwork for any same-sex marriages completed before Supreme Court halted the weddings on Monday.
Reyes’ spokeswoman Missy Larsen says the office is notifying counties Thursday afternoon.
More than 1,000 gay and lesbian couples took home marriage licenses from local clerks since Dec. 20, when a federal judge overturned Utah’s same-sex marriage ban.
In Weber County, about 30 couples married before the Supreme Court ruling but their final marriage certificates were not completed after county attorneys said to put them on hold.
Larsen says Reyes’ new directive was issued to clear up some confusion and only applies to marriages that were solemnized.
She says Utah is still not recognizing same-sex marriages or making a final ruling on their validity.
