PROVO, Utah – Utah State’s men’s and women’s track & field programs opened the 2020 campaign by recording four titles and 16 top-three finishes at the BYU Indoor Invitational, held Thursday through Saturday, at the Smith Fieldhouse.
“Overall, it was a good opening meet,” said third-year USU head coach Matt Ingebritsen. “We had a couple of standout performances, but for the most part, it was a great opportunity to kick the rust off and get the 2020 season underway. I see a lot of places where we can work on things going forward, but I am excited to see what we can do from here.”
All four titles came on the men’s side, highlighted by junior Josh Barclay’s victory in the shot put with a career-best mark of 18.51 meters (60-08.75), which ranks second all-time in school history.
Senior Kyle Morris won the weight throw with a mark of 16.14 meters (52-11.50), while fellow senior Oran Wasserman finished second in the event with a mark of 15.65 meters (51-04.25). In the discus, an exhibition event, junior Christian Sonnenberg finished first with a mark of 48.36 meters (158-08).
Freshman Heston Anderson gave the Aggies their final event title as he finished first in the mile with a personal-best time of 4:22.68. Fellow freshman Josh Wintch placed third in the event with a personal-best time of 4:24.24.
During the three days of competition, a total of 25 Utah State student-athletes either set or tied personal-best marks 26 times. The Aggies had nine top-three finishes on the women’s side and seven more on the men’s side.
Highlighting the Aggie women was sophomore Audrey Garrett, who captured second place in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 1.76 meters (5-09.25), which ranks fifth all-time in school history.
While the majority of Aggies spent the weekend at the BYU Indoor Invite, junior Aspen Drecksel competed in the pentathlon at the Idaho State-hosted Snake River Open at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
Utah State is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when the Aggies travel to Fargo, N.D., to compete in the North Dakota State Bison Team Cup.
