SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – The Utah Senate has unanimously approved a measure changing the state tree from the blue spruce to the quaking aspen.
The change was pushed by a fourth-grade class at Monroe Elementary School in Sevier County who argued the aspen was a better representation of Utah.
The Daily Herald in Provo reported last week that the students told lawmakers the aspen has a strong root system akin to the state’s cultural emphasis on family history and genealogy.
Monroe Republican Sen. Ralph Okerlund is sponsoring legislation that makes the change.
He says the quaking aspen is more prevalent than the blue spruce and can be found throughout the state.
The Senate approved the bill on a 26-0 vote Monday. It now moves to the House for consideration.
