SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The number of Utah residents enrolling in insurance plans using the federal health exchange has surpassed the number who used the system last year.

The Deseret News reported the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says 62,090 Utah residents purchased insurance using the exchange as of Nov. 23.

The agency’s data shows 56,105 people had enrolled by the same time last year.

The health exchange’s open enrollment period began Nov. 1 and is scheduled to run through Dec. 15.

Federal data indicates the average benchmark plan premium in Utah decreased from $509 in 2019 to $456 for 2020.

Officials say the national enrollment of 2.37 million by Nov. 23 was about a 2.1% decrease from the same point last year when there were 2.42 million registrations.
