LOGAN — Sheriff’s deputies and police officers had to use a tazer Tuesday night to arrest a 30-year-old Smithfield man, intoxicated and threatening to harm himself and his family.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said Zachery J. West was tased outside a home near 888 West State Road 218. West was reportedly trying to get into the home to retrieve a gun. When he refused to comply with deputies’ and officer’s orders; a tazer was deployed in an attempt to take him safely into custody.

Earlier, West had gotten into a verbal argument with a girlfriend and said he was going to his parents’ home to get a gun so that he could harm himself. A caller contacted Sheriff’s deputies and a Smithfield City police officer when West tried to get inside the locked home. When they arrived on the scene, they found him in the front yard arguing with his father.

After tasing West, deputies were able to take him into custody without further incident. He was arrested on initial charges of suspicion of disorderly conduct, public intoxication, driving under the influence of alcohol and assault. He was booked into the Cache County Jail. Formal charges are pending and an investigation is continuing. Bail has been set a $7,310.
