Smithfield City Police Officer Trent Currie was presented the “Officer of the Year Award,” during the Department’s memorial banquet, Friday night.

Travis Allen, who was promoted to Police Chief in November, said the dinner and awards ceremony was a first for the department.

Officers Brent Stirland and Denton Call were also given the “Lifesaving Ribbon.” Stirland was honored for rescuing a person from a house fire and Call was recognized for saving a person by performing CPR.

Allen said, “Medal of Valor Awards” were also given to Sgt. Trevor Larson, Cory Maxfield and Adam Roper. The three were involved with arresting Cade Austin, after the Preston, Idaho man drove his car off the road near Cove and began shooting at emergency responders.

The Friday award ceremony corresponded with national Police Week. The Cache County Sheriff’s Office and Logan City Police Department each held their awards banquets earlier this week. The North Park Police Department plans to hold theirs in October.
