LOGAN — Utah State men’s basketball center Jarred Shaw pleaded guilty to drug possession charges Friday, as the team announced his suspension was being lifted.
Cache County District Attorney James Swink said, “Shaw pleaded to a felony possession charge.”
Court records show that Shaw accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to a third-degree charge of marijuana possession instead of a second-degree marijuana distribution charge. In exchange for his guilty plea, two other misdemeanor charges, possession of drug paraphernalia and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, were both dropped.
Shaw was scheduled to appear again in court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. That hearing has been cancelled. He will now be sentenced on March 17.
Friday afternoon, Utah State men’s basketball head coach Stew Morrill announced that Shaw’s suspension from the team was being lifted after he missed five games.
Morrill said, “there has been lots of speculation and untrue rumors regarding Jarred. Jarred Shaw is a student-athlete who graduates this spring and who made a mistake. This was his first offense and he has served his penalty by missing five games. We will go forward from here, and our team is certainly excited to have Jarred back.”
Shaw will now be eligible to play Saturday night when the team hosts San Jose State, at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Shaw was originally suspended December 16, a day after police responded to a Logan residence on report of a possible sexual assault.
When they arrived, police determined Shaw and two other individuals had been using drugs at the residence. The Cache Rich Drug Task Force was called in to investigate.
Shaw is a 6-foot-10 senior from Dallas, Texas and was leading the Aggies in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.
