SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Senators have unanimously approved a bill restricting the use of Utah’s voter registration list.

The full Senate voted 26-0 to approve the measure Tuesday. It now must work its way through the Utah House for approval.

Lawmakers have cited concerns about potential misuse of the list, which Utah sells for $1,050.

The bill bars anyone other than government employees or officials to use the voter list for commercial purposes or to reproduce it, among other restrictions.

It makes exceptions for political, scholarly, journalistic or government uses of the list.

West Valley City Democratic Sen. Karen Mayne sponsors the measure, which she says was prompted because of website offering the information for free, which includes voters’ addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates and party affiliation.

Violations of the restrictions would be a misdemeanor.
