September 11, 1942 ~ January 28, 2020 – (age 77)

Richard Val Cowley born September 11, 1942 to W. Val Cowley and Maxine Leek Cowley in Ogden, Utah. Richard attended Washington Jr. High and Graduated from Ogden High in 1960. He served an LDS mission to the Peru South America Mission December 1961 to June 1964.

He married his pre-mission sweetheart, Wilma Waite of Syracuse in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 10, 1964. He served in various capacities in the Ogden 12th and Syracuse Wards; Ward Clerk duties were his favorite.

At a young age he began assisting with the family business, Cowley’s Department Store, in Tremonton, Utah. He also worked for several companies before pursuing his passion to own a business and started Cowley’s Apparel in Ogden. After it’s closing, he involved himself in the growing area of video rentals, eventually buying Star Video in Syracuse which he operated for over 30 years. Locals knew him as ‘The Video Man’.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; and sister, Janice.

Surviving are his loving wife, (Wilma) of 55 years; four sons, Paul (Kamila) Cowley – West Haven, Stephen (Kellie) – Clinton, Garth (JoEllen) Cowley – West Point, and Nathan (Rebecca) Cowley – Nibley; his sisters, Valeen (Dave) DeRyke – Ogden, and Sandra (Chris) Bond – South Weber. He also has 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and another one on the way.

The family wishes to express many thanks to the doctors and staff at Liberty Dialysis, and area hospitals that provided care to him over the last 3 years of his declining health.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 3, 2020 at 11:00am at Founders Park Ward Chapel, 1350 South 1800 West, Syracuse, Utah. Family and friends may gather Saturday evening February 1, 2020 at Myers Mortuary, 250 North Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah from 6:00 – 8:00pm. Interment will be at Syracuse City Cemetery, 1250 South 1000 West, Syracuse, Utah.
