LOGAN — A 43-year-old Providence woman has been sentenced to a year in jail for stealing money from her parents, while caring for them.

Shari Hansen Lazenby was sentenced in 1st District Court Monday morning. Court records show in March, she accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to a reduced charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult, a third-degree felony. Under the plea, a third-degree felony charge of forgery was dropped.

During Monday’s sentencing, Cache County Attorney James Swink told the court that Lazenby moved in with her parents after her father suffered a stroke. She then reportedly applied for credit cards in her parent’s name, changed passwords to their accounts and stole $80,000 that she used for plastic surgery, a fitness club membership and other items.

Swink said, “It was criminal conduct plain and simple.”

Speaking to Lazenby Judge Thomas Willmore said, “I have sat here for 15-years and I do not understand how people like you would steal from your parents. It’s beyond me. This is not right.”

Willmore also said he didn’t understand why the state would offer a plea deal reducing the defendant’s charges.

Swink said the state offered the plea deal to help the family resolve the case without having it go to trial.

As part of the sentence, Lazenby will serve a year in the Cache County Jail. After six-months, she will be allowed work release so that she can begin paying back her parents $4600 in restitution.
