LOGAN — Police are questioning a 31-year-old Logan man, Jose Almaguer who claimed he shot himself and was hiding from law enforcement, Tuesday morning.

Logan City Police Captain Curtis Hooley said officers found Almaguer behind a home near 1394 N. 290 W. after a resident called 911, reporting a man matching the suspect’s description, had just knocked on their door.

Police found Almaguer with what appeared to be a small caliber gunshot wound to his right wrist. He was treated by paramedics and transported by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital.

Hooley said Almaguer was originally questioned by officers and released earlier in the morning after police received a call around 2:30 a.m., from a woman who claimed he had borrowed her car and would not return it.

Police spotted the vehicle on Main St. near the north end of town with Almaguer driving it. He told officers he had borrowed the car but did not know the woman wanted it back. After he was released, officers were asked the by owner to search the vehicle and found a small bag of narcotics inside. The woman also reported a gun belonging to Almaguer was missing from her garage.

Hooley said, around 9:00 a.m. the woman called police again to report Almaguer had again showed up to her home near 1400 N. 200 W. saying he shot himself. He was reportedly wearing white shoes, gray sweats, a dark shirt and had a cut on his forehead.

Officers set up a perimeter, looking for Almaguer and made several reverse 911 calls to neighboring residents, asking them to watch for the suspect. Bridger Elementary, Bridgerland Applied Technology College and Cache High schools were all placed on lockdown as a precaution until he was found around 10:00 a.m.

Hooley said investigators are trying to determine how Almaguer was injured and if there is any correlation between him and the drugs found earlier in the car. So far he is not cooperating with police.
