LOGAN — Police have arrested a 40-year-old man living in a tent along the Logan River, accused of shoplifting from several retail stores.
Logan City Police Capt. Curtis Hooley said Christopher Polak was arrested Tuesday, attempting to steal clothing and food from the south Walmart, 1150 S. 100 W. He reportedly had hid the items into a backpack and was leaving the store when he was confronted by employees, who called police.
Polak is also accused of previously switching price labels on items at the store, and then purchasing them for a fraction of the cost. He is also believed to have stolen items from Smith’s Marketplace.
When police questioned Polak, he led them to a tent along the Logan River where he was living. Inside, they found between $500 and $700 in clothing, tools and camping equipment, all believed to be stolen.
Hooley said investigators are not sure why Polak was living along the river, between 600 West and 1000 West. He has had previous involvements with police.
Polak was booked into the Cache County Jail on two initial charges of retail theft, a third-degree felony and criminal trespassing, a class B misdemeanor. Bail has been set at $16,360.
The investigation is being turned over to the Cache County Attorney’s Office. Polak is expected to be arraigned Thursday in 1st District Court.
