LOGAN – Weight loss is one of the leading New Year’s resolutions, but local physical therapist Greg Schroeder said about one in three Americans have limitations that make it difficult for them to achieve that goal.

”You need to be able to match the type of exercise that you are capable of doing with whatever impairment or functional limitation that you have,” he explained. “And that’s where a physical therapist can come into the picture to help you with that.”

He said a common back problem is Lumbar Stenosis.

”What comes with that is pain when you walk — back pain and leg pain when you walk. And so we’ll have them in to physical therapy,” he continued. “We’ll teach them stretches that will help loosen them up.

“We have special equipment in the clinic that takes pressure off their spine as they walk. We’ll give them advice on types of things they can do at the gym. For example, in that type of a case that person might want to exercise in a pool.”

Schroeder said the goal of physical therapists is to help patients move better and more comfortably in order to live a more active and healthful life.

Greg Schroeder is owner of Back at Work Physical Therapy in Logan, Clearfield and Tremonton.
