BOISE, Idaho (AP) – As Idaho school kids face new “Common Core” standards to assess their educational progress, Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter aims to undermine legislative foes who have said they may try to reverse them.
In his State of the State speech Monday, Otter pledged to back changes meant help boost the privacy security of student data, while simultaneously saying he’ll fight to keep Common Core in place.
Promoters say these classroom standards will boost critical thinking among students – and help measure Idahoan’s educational progress compared with other states.
The Legislature in Idaho approved them in 2011.
Now, however, some opponents have branded them the product of a federal push.
Otter, meanwhile, counters that they are the result of state-led efforts to boost academic rigor, not some top-down initiative from Washington, D.C.
