SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Starting this year, most Utah residents summoned for jury duty will have a longer wait before they’re called to serve again.

A new law will remove someone from the pool of potential jurors for two years if they’re notified they might be called but are ultimately not required to show up.

Before Jan. 1, a person was only removed from the jury pool if they were required to actually report to the courthouse or serve.

Rep. Craig Hall sponsored legislation last year that made the change. The Republican from West Valley City says it will prevent people from being called multiple times in a short period.

He told the Deseret News that the change will also give more people an opportunity to serve.
