NIBLEY — A 25-year-old man was arrested late Sunday night after he allegedly held a woman against her will in a Newton home. Stuart C. Martin was booked into the Cache County Jail on multiple offences, including kidnapping and aggravated assault.

According to emergency radio traffic, multiple law enforcement agencies were called to a home near 53 South 200 West just before 4 p.m. A caller had phoned 911, claiming that Martin was inside the home and threatening to harm himself or the alleged victim. He reportedly had multiple firearms, including an AR-15 and several hunting rifles.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said SWAT teams and negotiators were called to the home and set up a command center at a nearby church. They surrounded the house, while attempting to contact Martin and the victim. The suspect had allegedly fired a handgun at least once inside the residence.

Negotiators were able to speak with the victim on the phone. She was able to escape the house through a window and run to waiting deputies.

Jensen said negotiations continued with Martin, who remained inside the home for approximately two hours. Around 6 pm, he surrendered to SWAT operators without incident.

Martin was detained and interviewed by detectives, before being booked into jail. He is being held without bail.

No injuries were reported.

Jensen did not specify about the connection between Martin and the victim. Reports are that they had supposedly had a prior relationship.

The case remains under investigation. Formal charges are pending.
