A major early winter storm threatens to affect travel plans on what is traditionally the busiest travel day of the year.   Travel across highways and roads in our area is expected to be greatly affected by a slow moving system expected early Wednesday.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for most of Utah, including southeast Idaho and extreme southwest Wyoming, beginning at 4a.m. Wednesday clear through to 10a.m. Saturday.   As is usually the case, the mountain areas are expected to get the brunt of the storm where accumulations could range from 1 to 3 feet with isolated amounts up to 4 feet once the storm starts to diminish on Saturday.

The Cache Valley is expected to receive 1 to 3 inches during the day Wednesday, then up to 2 inches on Wednesday night. With more accumulating snow possible on Thanksgiving day. Then a good chance of snow Thursday night through Friday.

Forecasters are saying the timeline of the storm is one of long duration.  Starting Wednesday, a band of snow will move into Utah and eventually nearly stall near Brigham City to Salt Lake City then to Cedar City by Wednesday night.   Heavier snow will focus under this band during this time.

On Thursday, the band of heaviest snow will gradually shift east, impacting the Wasatch Front periodically through much of Thursday.  Then snow will redevelop across northern Utah on one of the years’ busiest shopping days – Black Friday, and continue at times through the day across much of the state.

By Saturday, precipitation will gradually diminish.   Those who must travel are encouraged to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency.
