LOGAN — A 18-year-old Logan man was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly breaking into a Mormon church in College Ward and starting a fire in the kitchen.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said the fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. at an LDS chapel near 2394 West 2200 South.

When deputies arrived on the scene they found Antonio Rosa who had called 911 and claimed to have started the fire. He told deputies, he used a rock to break a window of the church and gain entry. Once inside, he reportedly started a fire in the kitchen and serving area.

Jensen said Logan City Police officers had been looking for Rosa earlier after he ran away from his proctor home.

Fire crews were able to limit damage to the kitchen. Jensen said there was also some smoke damage to the building.

Rosa reportedly told deputies that he hated churches because of their influence on his proctor parents. He was arrested without incident and charged with an initial offense of aggravated arson, a first-degree felony and burglary, a third-degree felony. He’s being held in the Cache County Jail on $25,000 bond.
