LOGAN — It’s a given that children seem to do better if a parent is more involved not only with their education but with their school. Hillcrest Elementary School and many in leadership positions in the Logan City School District are putting the word out to encourage parents to get more directly involved. There are a lot of different ways to get more involved.
On KVNU’s For the People program last week, Avery Jones, parental liaison for Hillcrest stressed the importance.
“I’ve been working in education for over 15 years and I’ve noticed that students do the best in school when they actually attend school and don’t miss too many days. And when they know that their parents care about education and that they’re involved in their child’s learning”, Jones said.
Throughout the year the school hosts several integrated activities to keep the school tied to the community. A big event is coming up in late April called International Night.
“The children, during the year, learn a song and a dance from the United States or from other countries. Each grade level, they perform that song and dance. We also have the Portuguese DLI (Dual language immersion) program, they do a song and a dance in Portuguese from Brazil or Portugal. It’s a lot of fun, they dress up, it’s great to watch. Besides that, we also have different tables that have displays”
Jones said they will also have volunteers from other countries, or from here, including parents and community members, who have lived in other countries. They will talk about topics such as the culture, history and landmarks. They will also have food vendors there for the evening as well.
