In a surprise to employees Sunday evening, it was announced that the Logan Dunkin’ Donuts will be closing its doors immediately. Representatives from franchisee Sizzling Platter announced an emergency, mandatory meeting Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.

According to shift manager Rusty Jacobs, nobody expected what happened next at the donut shop located at 1051 North Main.

“We were told that Dunkin’ Donuts would cease operations immediately,” Jacobs said. “They told us it wasn’t making any money.”

Jacobs said it was an emotional meeting and came at a time while he was still on the job.

“I came in and people were crying in that room,” Jacobs explains. “People have bills to pay, they expect to get paid, and Christmas is coming up. I was still on the job so I had to still take orders and work the window. It was really hard to keep my emotions in check.”

Jacobs, who has been with Dunkin’ Donuts since it first opened in Logan on January 27, said Sizzling Platter representatives told employees that they had options at other Dunkin’ Donuts locations along the Wasatch Front or with their other businesses in Logan, including Sizzler and Little Ceasers. However, they could not guarantee any significant hours.

“I feel like we were really caught off guard,” Jacobs continues. “They apparently made that decision on Thursday. Within a few days there will be no remnants of Dunkin’ Donuts in that location. All signs, all food, everything that had anything to do with Dunkin’ Donuts will be out of that store quickly.”

Monday morning the donut and coffee shop was dark and by the afternoon trucks from Yesco sign company were on hand taking signs off the building.

A sign posted on the doors reads “Effective Immediately: This Dunkin’ Donuts location will cease to operate.”

Not only were employees caught off guard by the announcement, some loyal customers were as well and took to social media to voice their frustration.

At 7:43 p.m. Sunday night @Meredith1841 wrote on Twitter, “Cant believe Logan Dunkin Donuts is done.”

On Monday morning, as people started to realize they couldn’t buy food or coffee from the location anymore, @MrAnderson_93 wrote, “DUNKIN DONUTS IN LOGAN IS CLOSING SOS” and @joefish_2 wrote, “Dunkin Donuts in Logan shut down and I’ve never been more upset in my life #FreeDunks.”

On Facebook, Jake Wolford posted a picture of the sign on the store’s door with the following caption: “PSA: Dunkin Donuts in Logan is shut down. Bummer.”

The Logan store held its grand opening on January 27 earlier this year but stayed in business barely nine months.

“For a while we were really struggling,” Jacobs says. “We thought it would be a slam dunk but it didn’t pan out.”

Messages were left for representatives of Sizzling Platter for comment.
