LOGAN — A judge has excused himself from two cases involving men who broke into four homes in North Logan, including Judge Brian Cannell’s.
Monday in 1st District Court, Judge Kevin Allen told 20-year-old Andrew Lapray and 21-year-old Garrett Stoddard he was transferring their cases to the 2nd District Court in Ogden. He told the two men, because the cases involved a fellow judge in the district, it would be hard to ensure them a fair trial.
Allen said he made the decision after discussing the cases with state and defense attorneys in his private chambers.
Lapray and Stoddard are suspected of breaking into four homes and several vehicles back in June, in the neighborhood of Elk Ridge Park, 2500 North 1060 East. The burglaries reportedly happened early in the morning on June 2, between 1 and 5 a.m. Residents reported the burglaries happened while they slept.
Police reported some of the items stolen included laptops, TVs, video game systems and bicycles. Several wallets were also reported stolen from cars near the park.
North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes said he doesn’t believe the men specifically targeted Judge Cannell’s home and they didn’t know any of the residents personally.
Lapray was arrested August 29 and Stoddard was arrested September 2. Both men are being held in the Cache County Jail and will be soon transferred to the Weber County Jail.
