LOGAN – “I’m amazed at the great people with whom I have worked,” said Herm Olsen, the day following his official retirement from elected office.
The three-term Logan City Council member attended his final meeting Tuesday evening and it was a good night for him.
For the last five years, Olsen has been advocating for a ban on the distribution of single use plastic bags. During his time on the council, he often talked about the consequences of plastic waste in our communities and landfills. His passion and persuasive rhetoric on the issue paid off. Council members passed a resolution and an ordinance addressing the plastics problem.
Olsen said his departure was bitter sweet. He said he will miss the people, but not the meetings.
“I’m glad to essentially be done with so many meetings,” he stated. “It’s a huge commitment of time, effort and labor and I’m just grateful there were good people working behind the scenes.”
“The city council is made up of human beings who really care about Logan City,” he said. “Running a city…takes the coordinated effort of a lot of really dedicated people and that has just amazed me and heartened me. I’m just glad to have been part of the process. I’m glad to turn it over to younger, fresher minds. Logan is in good hands.”
Olsen may be leaving public service, but will remain busy and active. He is a law partner in the firm Hillyard Anderson Olsen and the current President of the Utah Bar Association.
