LOGAN, Utah – Former Utah State football and track athlete and legendary team physician, Dr. John Worley, passed away last week in Logan at the age of 90. Worley was inducted into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
As a student-athlete, Worley competed in both football and track & field for Utah State in the late 1940s and scored the game-winning touchdown against Utah to secure the conference championship for the Aggies on Thanksgiving Day, 1946.
Worley later spent 42 years as Utah State’s team physician before retiring in 1998. Overall, Worley was involved in USU’s first six football bowl games in school history as he was a player on the 1946 and 1947 bowl teams, and then served as the team physician for the 1960 Sun Bowl, 1961 Gotham Bowl, 1993 Las Vegas Bowl II and 1997 Humanitarian Bowl.
“Doctor Worley dedicated his life to Utah State Athletics and there are countless Aggies who benefited from his knowledge and devotion,” said USU Vice President and Athletics Director John Hartwell. “On behalf of Utah State University, we are saddened by his loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
Worley also had The Sports Medicine Research Center located inside the Dale Mildenberger Sports Medicine Complex named in his honor in 2008. Both areas are located on the first floor of the Jim and Carol Laub Athletics-Academics Complex on the USU campus at the north end of Maverik Stadium.
