LOGAN — A 51-year-old Lewiston man has been arraigned on numerous theft and burglary charges, days after allegedly being seen stealing mail from several Smithfield mailboxes. Travis Goodwin was booked into the Cache County Jail last Thursday.
Goodwin was formally arraigned in 1st District Court Tuesday morning. State attorneys filed five criminal cases against him, including 14 felonies and 24 misdemeanors.
Last week, deputies received a report of an individual tampering with mailboxes. Cache County residents claimed they had seen the man driving away in a green Jeep Grand Cherokee in the Smithfield City area.
Deputies were able to stop a vehicle matching that description in Richmond and took Goodwin into custody.
Detectives later learned that Goodwin was suspected of multiple thefts of mail from mailboxes as well as burglarizing at least two storage units in North Logan. The alleged victims in those cases were contacted and able to identify their property that was in the suspect’s possession.
Cache County deputy attorneys claim the crimes occurred between December 13 and January 9, when Goodwin was arrested.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, Goodwin said he had made a “big and horrible mistake.” He didn’t provide any further details but explained that he has had a drug problem.
Judge Brian Cannell assigned Goodwin a public defender. He also refused to lower the suspect’s bail, explaining that it appeared he had harmed a lot of people.
Goodwin was ordered to appear again in court January 21. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
