LOGAN – As Region 11 teams approach the last week of the regular season, they do so without knowing the latest RPI standings for the state. Just as they did for football this past season, the Utah High School Activities Association has not made public the latest RPI rankings for the last week of the regular season. For boys basketball, it’s not likely that much changed at the top since both Sky View and Dixie went won games and lost games last week. Even though the Riverhawks defeated the Bobcats on Friday, both Sky View and Dixie still hold better overall records than Ridgeline, which likely means rankings one through three remain the same with Sky View on top, followed by Dixie and Ridgeline.

A similar upset occurred Thursday in girls basketball, but in reverse. Ridgeline was the #2 team in the state in RPI heading into Thursday’s matchup with Sky View, who was the 11th ranked team in 4A. Sky View won the 3rd and 4th quarters in a close contest, defeating Ridgeline in Millville 54-51.

Those teams which remain in the top 10 of RPI standings at the end of this week will get a first round bye in the 4A state basketball tournament, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, February 18th for the boys and Wednesday, February 19th for the girls at home sites. Second round games will be played on Friday, February 21st for the boys and Saturday, February 22nd for the girls, also at home sites.

BOYS BASKETBALL STANDINGS
Sky View 16-3, 7-1
Ridgeline 14-6, 7-1
Bear River 12-8, 3-5
Green Canyon 11-9, 4-4
Logan 7-13, 3-5
Mountain Crest 1-18, 0-8

GIRLS BASKETBALL STANDINGS
Ridgeline 15-5, 7-1
Green Canyon 15-4, 6-2
Logan 12-7, 4-4
Sky View 10-10, 5-3
Bear River 7-12, 2-6
Mountain Crest 5-14, 0-8

The final week of the regular season gives Region 11 teams two last chances to improve their RPI standings and solidify a region championship. And some of these final games feature both new and historic rivalries. To secure a Region 11 championship, the Ridgeline girls will need to do so away from home. They play at rival Mountain Crest on Tuesday and at previously-ranked-#6 Logan at Thursday. Sky View and Bear River are hoping to finish the regular season in the top 10 of UHSAA RPI standings to earn that first round bye. Sky View, previously ranked 11th, won both of their games last week but face rival Green Canyon (who was previously ranked 4th in the state) and Mountain Crest. Both of those games will be in Smithfield.

For the boys, meanwhile, Ridgeline and Sky View will need to take care of business themselves while hoping for the other team to stumble to secure an outright region championship. Ridgeline plays the bottom two teams in the region (at Mountain Crest and at Logan), while Sky View plays new rival Green Canyon on Wednesday and at traditional rival Mountain Crest on Friday. Bear River and Green Canyon are playing to secure a top 10 finish in the final RPI. Bear River was ranked 9th in the last RPI that was published, while Green Canyon was ranked 12th. The Wolves won both of their games last week, while Bear River split.
