SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former CIA officer and Brigham Young University graduate says he’s running for president as an independent because he believes many people want an alternative to Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.
KUTV reports Evan McMullin launched his campaign at a downtown Salt Lake City office on Wednesday night in front of about 100 people.
McMullin was born in Utah and raised in Washington.
He told the Deseret News that he was initially working with Republicans who wanted to stop Trump’s path to the GOP nomination and joined an early effort to try to persuade Mitt Romney to run again.
McMullin has already missed the deadline to get on the ballot in some states but he says he has a plan that will include lawsuits and cooperation with smaller political parties.
