U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has issued a statement saying same-sex marriages in Utah will be recognized as lawful and considered eligible for all relevant federal benefits pending additional court action.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert has said  the state will not recognize these marriages until the U.S. Supreme Court issues a final ruling.

Utah State Representative Jack Draxler, R-District 3, explained how the legislature is getting involved in this issue during its 2014 session.

“The primary involvement we have is to appropriate funds for the appeal that is taking place right now,” Draxler said on KVNU’s Crosstalk program on Friday. “The (Utah) Attorney General has estimated $2 million would be required.

“I support that because I believe the people of the state voted overwhelmingly in favor of Amendment 3. I think we should pursue the appeal.”

Draxler also said the legislature can also pass some resolutions but they would not be binding.
