LOGAN — A 28-year-old Sparks, Nevada man has been sentenced to 90-days in jail and a $3000 fine after pleading guilty to driving over a co-worker.
Kristofer Paul Talancon appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday, pleading guilty to reduced charges in the case.
According to sheriff’s reports, on the night of August 2, 2013, Talancon and a co-worker, Joseph Marcaida were delivering furniture in Smithfield Canyon. The two got into an argument after making a wrong turn and getting lost, near 2100 East Canyon Road.
Marcaida reportedly got out of the vehicle to help turn the truck around, when Talancon ran over him and then drove away.
Marcaida received severe injuries and was taken by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital. He was later flown to McKay Dee Hospital.
Taloncon was arrested later that night in Woods Cross, still driving the delivery truck. He was booked into the Cache County Jail.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, state attorney Tony Baird said Marcaida told investigators that he and Taloncon had been using methamphetamine before the accident.
Taloncon pleaded guilty to fleeing the scene of an accident involving serious injury and use of a controlled substance, both second-degree felonies. Two other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Judge Brian Cannell said he was hopeful that Taloncon learned a lesson from the experience and won’t ever put anyone in that type of situation again.
