For three quarters Saturday, the Utah State football team had little going for it.
The Aggies faced a 24-7 deficit entering the 4th quarter but scored 10 unanswered points before ultimately falling 24-17 to Fresno State in the inaugural Mountain West Championship game.
Linebacker Jake Doughty scored USU’s only points of the first half with an 83-yard fumble return for a touchdown with three seconds left in the half to turn the tide for the Aggies.
USU received the second half kickoff with a chance to cut into the deficit, but failed to capitalize on two Brian Suite interceptions before allowing Derek Carr to lead Fresno State on a touchdown drive and a 17-point lead.
Freshman quarterback Darell Garretson was knocked out of the game on a helmet-to-helmet hit that was not flagged, but Craig Harrison came in and led the Aggies back.
Bruce Natson scored on a 10-yard touchdown run and USU recovered the ensuing onside kick. The Aggies got a 20-yard field goal to get within seven.
But it wasn’t to be for Utah State, as the Aggies failed on two potential game-tying drives.
USU finished 4-of-16 on third down and the offense failed to produce points on three Bulldog turnovers.
The Aggies fell to 8-5 overall on the season and 7-2 in MWC play. Utah State will await a bowl invitation.
