In an effort to reduce air pollution, an emission testing program began this week in Cache County. Josh Green of the Bear River Health Department is in charge of the program and he was a guest Thursday on KVNU’s For the People show answering callers’ questions. Green said if a check engine light is on, it means an automatic failure.

“Here’s where a misconception comes in to place. If a code commands that light to come on, it is emissions related. A lot of people don’t like that concept. They don’t believe it. The ‘check engine’ light is a federally regulated component about the emissions control system in a vehicle,” Green said.

He also added that when the check engine light is on, it means the transmission is putting out emissions.
