The address is the same – 359 South Main in Logan – but starting on Tuesday, August 2 there will be major changes at the Cache Community Food Pantry.
Since the pantry opened 25 years ago those who qualify for food assistance have been picking it up on Tuesdays, then taking it home to share with family members.
Matt Whitaker says there will be expanded hours and a new look at the pantry.
“We’re building a reception desk out there in the warehouse,” he explains. “We’re putting in shelving, reach-in coolers and freezers. We’re trying to put in a waiting area for children so they have something to do while their mom or dad shops for them. It’s a lot to get done.”
The method of distribution is also changing. Whitaker says with increasing numbers of families needing assistance, it has become too crowded so instead of having the clients stand in line, the pantry is expanding its hours.
“Instead of all day Tuesday, we’re going to serve Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 o’clock in the morning until 1 in the afternoon, also Thursday night from 6-8 p.m.,” Whitaker explains. “We’re creating a whole new atmosphere in our warehouse to make it look and feel more like a grocery store to help reduce any kind of stigma that is attached to coming to a food pantry.”
Whitaker says they want to make the experience as pleasant as possible. With the help of volunteers, he is hoping everything will be done by Tuesday.
