After 15 years in existence Cache Valley Hospital now provides maternity care and Sunday, July 12 marked the first birth of a child at the hospital.
“Since we opened in 2000 we have had many in the community asking when we would start delivering babies,” said Cache Valley CEO John Worley. “It’s been a long time coming and this service is the first of what we hope are many new additions at the hospital through our new partnership with MountainStar Healthcare.”
The first delivery was a healthy newborn boy who weighed 7 pounds 14 ounces and was 20 inches long at birth. His name is Mason and his parents are Rebekeh and Kyle Hamilton.
“Our service line over the years has been so focused on surgical care that we just didn’t have the personnel or the equipment to open this service.
“It is the culmination of a new service line, new equipment and new staff in order for us to be able to offer this service. It requires a completely different set of skills and training for nurses and techs.”
He said it required a new group of team members plus new beds, new equipment, new monitoring capabilities and a new skill set from the nursing staff.
“When this hospital was built there were two rooms included to allow us to perform birthing services, when needed. The plan now is to begin building a new wing which will include an additional set of rooms. That will happen sometime in 2016.”
Worley said part of the purchase and acquisition agreement with MountainStar was that a new labor/delivery unit would be the first project.
“MountainStar has been important in helping us go out and recruit experienced labor and delivery staff and a team that has been doing this for a long time.”
