The Cache County Council has voted to change the way employees are paid with the money they make depending on how much they work. Before now, officials have run for election on a set full-time salary but Council Chairman Val Potter says some end up working less than full-time yet still receive the full amount.
On Tuesday, the council voted six to one for a new ordinance that would allow county officials to get the full-time salary or receive part-time compensation. Councilmember Jon White abstained from voting saying he feels the new ordinance could, “open up a can of worms.”
The ordinance is the first of its kind in Utah and it allows for part-time compensation for part-time work while the present ordinance does not. The new ordinance states that “a county officer will be paid a part-time salary if the officer gives notice that he or she chooses to work, or the County finds that the county officer in fact works less than 30 hours per week, in which case the part-time salary will be an hourly wage based upon the pro-rated amount of the full-time salary. The county officer may not receive other compensatory benefits unless approved by the County.”
