Rescuers recovered the body of a 37-year-old Layton man Thursday night, at the Bear Lake State Park Marina in Garden City.

State Park Lt. Eric Stucki said Justin Petersen was found in approximately 15-feet of water shortly after 8:00 p.m. He was last seen on the docks of the marina Wednesday night.

“He was with his family or his father, on his father’s boat,” said Stucki. “They both have boats in the Bear Lake marina. He had told his father that he wanted to get some rest so he was going to go to his boat and don’t wake him up in the morning, come and get him in the afternoon.”

“So his father went over there Thursday afternoon to wake his son up,” said Stucki. “That’s when he couldn’t find his son and notified authorities.”

Family and authorities checked with Petersen’s friends, family and employment but could not find him.

Stucki said searchers then started to focus in the water.

“We took out our Utah State Park boat that has side-sonar,” said Stucki. “We did a side-sonar of the whole marina and found a couple points of interests. We then brought in the local divers, some of them are members of the Rich County Search and Rescue team and the divers went and checked out those points of interests and that is where we had found him at.”

Searchers say it appears that Petersen fell from the docks, after leaving his father’s boat. Utah State Medical Examiners are conducting an investigation into the cause of death.

Stucki said Petersen’s death hits close to home and their heart’s go out to the family.

Utah State Park Rangers, Rich County Sheriff’s office, Rich County Search and Rescue and local community divers assisted with the search.
