LOGAN – Playing in the first ever edition of Bridger’s Battle, the stakes were high for the Utah State football team.
The Aggies took care of business, defeating Wyoming 35-7 to earn a spot in the first ever Mountain West Conference title game.
“I don’t know where to start except to praise those players,” USU head coach Matt Wells said. “It’s been a long but short road since the Boise State game. These kids put their blinders on and shut out all the noise from the outside to rally together. Today was just another testament to that and I’m just so proud of them.”
USU raced to a 21-0 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Freshman quarterback Darell Garretson hit Wyatt Houston for a 6-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead, and Bruce Natson returned a punt 64 yards to give the Aggies a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Utah State kept pouring it on through the third quarter as Natson got his second touchdown of the game on a pass from Garretson and Brandon Swindall caught another for a 35-0 lead through three quarters.
“Being able to run the ball, be great in special teams and play exceptional defense, and we did all three of those today and found a way to win. It’s unbelievable,” Wells said.
Senior running back Joey DeMartino eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the season and the Aggie defense held Wyoming to just 190 total yards.
The Aggies improved to 8-4 overall and 7-1 in MWC play to finish first in the Mountain Division.
Utah State will travel to Fresno State to face the Bulldogs in the MWC title game on Saturday, Dec. 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. MST.
