A four-vehicle accident Friday night sent five people to the hospital and closed a portion of Main Street in Smithfield for several hours.

Smithfield City Police Sgt. Trevor Larson said the accident occurred around 7:00 p.m. near 850 S. Main. The five patients were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals. The extent of their injuries were not released.

Police are still investigating the accident that involved vehicles travelling in both directions.

Larson said speed appears to be a major factor in causing the accidents. The speed limit along that stretch of the road decreases from 55 mph. to 45 mph. There was also heavy rain falling at the time that may have also been a factor.

Northbound traffic was detoured for several hours and southbound traffic was restricted to just one lane, while crews cleared the crashes.
