COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — San Diego State (28-1, 17-1 MW) won the 2019-20 Mountain West regular-season title and enters the 2020 Air Force Reserve MW Men’s Basketball Championship as the No. 1 seed. This is the Aztecs fourth outright regular-season league title.

San Diego State’s 17-1 record in Conference play is the best mark since the MW went to an 18-game schedule in 2013-14. This is the fourth time that the Aztecs have entered the championship as the No. 1 seed.

With a 13-5 record during MW action, Utah State will be the 2-seed. Nevada earned the No. 3 seed after winning the head-to-head tiebreaker over UNLV, which will claim the No. 4 seed. Boise State will be No. 5 seed after winning the head-to-head tiebreaker over Colorado State. The Rams will be the No. 6 seed and New Mexico claims the No. 7 seed with a victory in its final regular-season game.

Fresno State and Air Force earned the eight and nine seeds, respectively, while San José State (10) and Wyoming (11) round out the bracket.

The 2020 Air Force Reserve MW Men’s Basketball Championship will be held in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center, March 4-7. Action gets underway Wednesday, March 4, with three first-round matchups airing on the Mountain West Network. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds take place on Thursday, March 5, and Friday, March 6, respectively, and will be televised on CBS Sports Network. The championship game will be broadcast on CBS at 2:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, March 7.

Mountain West Men’s Basketball Championship Notes

  • San Diego State has won the most Mountain West tournament titles with five. The Aztecs were victorious in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2018.
  • Overall, the MW tournament has produced 11 different champions in 20 years, with the current MW membership accounting for 17 of the 20 titles. San Diego State (5), New Mexico (4), and UNLV (3) are the only current MW teams to have won multiple titles while Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Utah State and Wyoming have each captured one crown.
  • A Mountain West regular-season champion or co/tri-champion has advanced to the championship game 15 times in 20 years, winning the crown nine times. Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah State and UNLV are the only five current MW members to earn a MW regular-season title and tournament crown in the same year. Additionally, the Wolf Pack (2017), Lobos (2013) and Aztecs (2006 and 2020) are the only teams to capture the tournament title after winning the regular-season crown outright.
  • The top two seeds have met nine times in the MW tournament finals, with the No. 2 seed winning eight of nine meetings.
  • No. 1 seeds have only won four tournament titles and are 4-7 in the championship games.
  • The No. 2 seed has won 10 of 20 MW championships.
