LOGAN– Police took a 13 year old juvenile male from Logan into custody for the aggravated arson at 20 South 400 East on April 30, 2013. The fire caused approximately $5,000 in damage to the duplex involved. He will be referred to the Juvenile Court for one count of 1st Degree Felony Aggravated Arson and B Misdemeanor Retail Theft.

“We have charged him at this point with a first degree felony aggravated assault charge, and a B misdemeanor retail theft,” LCPD Assistant Chief Jeff Curtis said. “The first degree felony is because he set fire to a habitable structure. It was a duplex, and there were people living in the other half of the duplex. If the fire would have burned any longer, it could have gone up into the upper story of the duplex and affected that family as well.”

The case file was presented to the Cache County Attorney office and was reviewed by them. Police were informed yesterday there was enough evidence to refer the Juvenile and were instructed to take him into custody and transport him to the Detention Facility.

The juvenile is currently being held in the Cache County Detention Facility.

“He didn’t give us any indication of what his motive was behind doing what he did. He just admitted to doing it,” Curtis said. “He acted alone in what he did.”
